When young people are encouraged to create something of their own, previously untapped talent and confidence rise to the surface. These experiences can change the course of a life, positively impacting self-esteem and resourcefulness in problem solving. This responsibility empowers youth as they continue their education and prepare for adult life. Thinking creatively, then learning how to bring those dreams to fruition – that is the core foundation of achievement and a fully lived life. When we support others in the pursuit of excellence in expression, we support it in ourselves too.
Canvas Lit is Writers & Books’ online literary magazine written for and by teenagers. In an age of ever-expanding social media, Canvas Lit aims to reach, encourage, and educate teens in Rochester and beyond about the art of poetry and prose via a youth-based magazine published completely online.
Canvas Lit is published quarterly, and includes poetry, flash fiction, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Submissions are chosen by the magazine’s editorial board – a group composed of one adult administrator/mentor and eight high school students. The student board is responsible for choosing the length of each publication, which submissions to accept, themes for each issue, and the general layout of each publication. This ensures that each magazine publication is representative of, and faithful to, the voices of Rochester youth, and will also provide valuable editorial experience for the student board.
