This eight-week course is intended for poets who have previous workshop experience and are working on refining their writing toward the goal of publication. This course will focus on developing creative process and voice. There will be weekly assigned readings (primarily contemporary poetry, alongside some relevant articles on craft and process) with discussion questions and corresponding writing prompts. On a weekly basis, students will be expected to read around 10-12 poems, write at least 1 poem, and provide constructive criticism on poems by their peers. This is a LAB, not a WORKSHOP: a rough draft will be seen as an experiment in finding your inner poet, not as a broken machine to be soldered together with proper iambs. Yes, we will discuss elements of craft when applicable. No, we will not be proper. We will read and write a lot of poetry. There are no F’s if you don’t complete the assignments, but you can’t expect to grow as a poet if you don’t put in hard work.
