America’s Political Poem: Still Audible Today? (Online)

Instructor(s): Karen Beck
Beginner Beginner Beginner

It is currently a much debated topic whether the genre of political poetry continues to be an art form of authenticity and substance. This eight-week online course will give students the opportunity to explore this debate from the viewpoint of the poet, the 21st century audience, and some of the country’s current political leaders and key players.
Each session will address a different aspect of the American political poem from its history to its impact on social movements and will include a survey of the role played by the political poem in upstate New York’s Burned Over District. Students will also write a poem (or more, if desired) related to the topic, time period, or movement covered in class.
