Beginner Beginner

This summer, Writers & Books is excited to offer an in-depth look at the process of publishing and promoting your book. If you have a complete manuscript or an idea that you would like to develop, Nina Alvarez will take you through the process of getting your work published and show how to effectively promote your work. You will learn how to compose an attractive book proposal, how to create a query letter that will catch the eye of prospective agents and publishing houses, and learn how to promote your work so you can reach as many readers as possible. Click the title of any of the class to sign up for the class individually, or sign up for all three for a reduced price! Spend your summer learning what it takes to have your voice heard!

Nonfiction writers have the luxury of not having to complete a full manuscript before pitching it to agents and publishing houses. But they do need a stellar book proposal and a couple sample chapters. In this workshop we will discuss how to write the kind of book proposal that will give your book its best foot forward: with a clear sense of their purpose, niche, target audience, competition, market, and the publicity and promotion potential of the author and the idea. We will also spend a brief amount of time discussing effective ways to submit proposals. Every proposal requires an accompanying query letter, so you are encouraged to take this in tandem with the Author Summer Series course of Query Letters. Every proposal and query letter require a section on author platform/publicity and promotion, so you are also encouraged to take the Book Promotion class as well.

A good query letter can make or break your ability to get your full manuscript in front of an agent or publishing house. This workshop will focus on techniques for writing a strong but brief story synopsis, a compelling author bio that emphasizes platform, and tailoring the query to whomever you are pitching. We will briefly discuss how to search for appropriate agents and publishing houses.
