Read and discuss two modern classic novels dealing with the magic of food: Mexican author Laura Esquivel’s Like Water for Chocolate and Chocolat, by Joanne Harris. Both authors present intricately crafted stories of conflicting old and new world values with the female protagonists expressing themselves in the creation of sumptuous foods. Esquivel uses the rich tradition of Latin American Magic Realism to add depth and color to her tale of generational misunderstanding and unrequited love. Harris perfectly captures the battle between the old French Church and the secular pleasures evoked by magical chocolate creations. There may even be a few food samples to enjoy along the way! Purchase of both novels will be required.
