One of the greatest epic poems of the Italian Renaissance, Orlando Furioso is an intricate tale of love and enchantment set at the time of the Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne’s conflict with the Moors. It’s a zippy, kaleidoscopic, near manic narrative encompassing a huge cast of warriors, lovers, and lady knights as they battle each other, fall in love, battle sea monsters, ride flying horses, and even go to the Moon. At the core of this fantastic adventure is a surprisingly humanistic medieval worldview. We’ll be reading David Slavitt’s zany and anarchic translation and abridgement.
