Reading Othello

Instructor(s): Dia Lawrence
Location: WAB – 740 University Ave.

Although Othello has been one of Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedies for 400 years, it continues to yield new perspectives as its audiences evolve.  How do we respond to the play’s themes of jealousy and racial tension in the 21st century?  What does Othello yield now when we consider the themes of gender and class as well as race?  These questions are an invitation for class members to consider and share their own responses to this tragedy and its uncanny ability to seem current.
