Reading Robert Frost

Instructor(s): David Sanders
Location: WAB – 740 University Ave.

This seminar will explore the pleasures and rewards offered by America’s greatest 20th century poetry. Though a person of remarkable learning and intellectual sophistication, Frost was determined to reach ordinary readers. Cultivating a style that remained accessible without sacrificing complexity or depth, he took pride in making music from the “sound of sense” and “a poetry that talks” from “a language absolutely unliterary.” This seminar will sample the range of Frost’s work from dramatic masterpieces such as “Home Burial” and “The Death of the Hired Man” to his large body of timeless lyrics such as “After Apple-Picking,” “Birches,” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.” Participants will be encouraged to suggest their own favorite poems for inclusion in our conversation.
