Reading Robert Frost

Instructor(s): David Sanders

This seminar will explore the pleasures and rewards of a poetry with apparent simplicity that easily masks its richness and complexity. Though a poet of unusual learning and sophistication, Frost was determined to reach ordinary readers. Making music from the “sound of sense” and “a poetry that talks” from “a language absolutely unliterary,” he created a style that remained accessible without sacrificing emotional or intellectual depth. This seminar will sample the range of his work from such dramatic masterpieces as “Home Burial” and “The Death of the Hired Man” to such of timeless lyrics as “Mending Wall,” “After Apple-Picking,” “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening,” among many others. Participants will be encouraged to suggest poems for inclusion in our conversation.
