The Art of Confession will focus on both reading and writing poems in the confessional tradition. Course texts will include Live or Die by Anne Sexton, Ariel by Sylvia Plath, Heart’s Needle by W.D. Snodgrass, and Life Studies by Robert Lowell. In order to think about how to approach confessional material as twenty-first century writers, online selections from more contemporary poets will also be assigned, such as Gabrielle Calvocoressi, Kim Addonizio, Rachel McKibbens, Natalie Diaz, Nick Flynn, and others. The first half of each session will be devoted to discussing course texts, while the latter half will be devoted to a workshop of student work. This is an eight week class that will run from June 19 to August 14.
