The so-called free indirect narrative voice, or free indirect discourse, is a narrative tool by which a third-person narration slips into the voice of the a fictional character. It is a way of bringing some of the immediacy of first-person narration into the third person. Used well, it is colorful and powerful tool. Used poorly, or overdone, the actual narrative voice is lost.
