Take a journey there and back again with Bilbo Baggins, burglar extraordinaire, and the band of 12 dwarves! We’ll explore themes from the book like good versus evil, redemption, friendship, and loyalty. And we’ll have some fun with guessing what Bilbo has got in his pocketses in Riddles in the Dark, playing hobbit trivia games, writing in Dwarvish (actually based on the Anglo-Saxon language and alphabet), and increasing your English vocabulary as you master the awe-inspiring language used by J.R.R. Tolkien. We’ll even explore the animal world of the Hobbit with a special visit from the Zoomobile! Students will also learn about the elements of the fantasy genre, as well as explore fantasy stories from other authors like Tolkien’s friend C.S. Lewis, contemporary fantasy writers Chris Paolini, Erin Hunter and more. Students will work on fan fiction based on The Hobbit, as well as any story they may choose within the fantasy genre.
