Reyna Grande, the 2018 Rochester Reads author, cites The House on Mango Street as an important book in her journey as a writer. This lyrical text by Sandra Cisneros will serve as a jumping-off point for exploring themes of identity, belonging, and home in our own writing, while honing craft elements such as voice, metaphor, and scene. There will be readings and discussion in class but the primary focus will be on generating several publishable vignettes by the end of the five weeks.
