Writing the Brief Essay: Flash Non-Fiction

Instructor(s): Gail Hosking
Beginner Beginner Beginner

In this workshop we will break down the craft elements of this genre, this mostly unstudied tradition, which has its roots in Greece, Japan, and France with the likes of Plutarch, Sei Shonagon, Michel de Montaigne, and Mark Twain. These idiosyncratic meditations straddle the essay and the lyric poem. Through readings and exercises we will create brief pieces of 750-2000 words. We will see how the containment of art can be made even more acute by its brevity.
