Gell Prize 2015 Winner

saunier1-1Claire Kiefer Wins the 2015 Gell Poetry Prize

Writers & Books and Big Pencil Press are pleased to announce that Claire Kiefer is the Winner of the prestigious Kenneth & Geraldine Gell Poetry Prize for 2015 for her book manuscript Bear Witness. Ms. Kiefer lives near Oakland, CA.

Of the collection, Claire writes “Prompted by the 2005 execution of Stanley “Tookie” Williams, this collection both looks at Williams’ execution as an iconic experience, and considers the social implications of capital punishment through lyrical exploration and imagined experience. These poems ask what it means to bear witness, investigate the physical and emotional process of witnessing, and attempt to unearth the deep guilt of accountability in a person after she has been a witness.”

Her manuscript was selected by the Finalist Judge for the Award, Cornelius Eady. The Gell Prize is awarded annually by Writers & Books. Bear Witness will be published by Writers & Books’ publishing imprint Big Pencil Press. Look for it in April, 2016!
