Call for Work: Kindred
(March 1-15, 2003) As part of the community-wide reading and discussion program “If All of Rochester Read the Same Book…” sponsored by Writers & Books, the Rochester Contemporary is hosting a juried exhibition of visual art created in response to the novel Kindred by Octavia Butler.
The novel follows a present-day African American woman as she travels back in time—against her will—to a slave plantation in Maryland to mysteriously save the life of a slave owner. Copies of Kindred are on sale at Writers & Books at 740 University Avenue. Butler will be in Rochester March 4-7, 2003 for a series of readings and appearances.
The exhibition will be on view March 1-15, 2003 at Mood Makers Books in the Village Gate Square at 274 North Goodman Street. This exhibition is open to all Rochester-area artists and students working in all media. Selected artists receive a modest honorarium.
Jurors: Elizabeth McDade, Karen vanMeenen and Thomas Warfield.
