John Kastner, who earned his BFA in illustration from RIT, has taught at the Creative Workshop at the Memorial Art Gallery since 1968. He has also taught at RIT, Finger Lakes Community College, as an artist-in-residence for the Rochester City School District, the Aesthetic Education Institute and in the Monroe County Library System. He has illustrated Lollipop Grapes and Clothespin Critters; Martin Luther King Jr., a Biography for Young Children; and most recently What’s UP with Yuk?. On a regular basis, he creates portraits of the performing artists for Heartland Concerts. John’s commercial illustrations for Kodak, Xerox, GM, Scholastic, McGraw-Hill, Fisher-Price, Addison-Wesley, Scott Foresman, Silver Burdett Ginn, Harcourt Brace, and Cricket magazine have been seen around the world. Locally, his murals are on view at Rochester City Hall and the Strong Museum. His paintings were also featured in the MAG’s 2005 Rochester-Finger Lakes Exhibition. In 2012, John’s work received Best in Show at Illustration 50 West, a prestigious annual competition held by the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles.
