Where’s Walden III

Works by Wendy Low

Friday Night Alone in a House on the Verge

Shush!
Can’t you hear
the click of the stoplight
at the corner?
Slush engulfing the
yard in a great hush?
The swoosh of some
great bird between
pine branches?
The silence of the night sky?
Shush.
Shush.

until
The birds
as your
alarm clock! then
the great
onrush of sunlight,
words.

The Group Gathered at the Jump-Off

Vanessa blinks,
oblivious to oblivion
and speaks like a sudden cicada.

Felicia lingers and whispers.

Jeb bugs perfect and
doesn’t exist.

Steve knows stories,
vague and vagrant.

Angela streaming over the hill.

Julie, who’s cool as a shrewd auburn fox.

Adelaide, always on pitch.
Rosie raises a house by the stream.

Sophie’s small self is
water, sweet in her
Own mouth.

Sarah stands on a mile-high escalator,
seeing a daisy sway.

Gaelyn goes vagrant
And takes off her shoes.

Bill believes in oblivion-
the conservation of matter and energy.

So much energy.

Wendy will float away in the wind.
