Winter 2007 Workshops at Writers & Books Creative Non-FictionWriting the Family History: Creative Ways to Chronicle the Lives You Love
Explore various approaches to writing a history of your family. Give a storyteller’s flair to traditional fact-gathering and genealogy, while also effectively incorporating your ancestors’ letters and diaries. Margaret Potter will teach you research and writing tips that will make your family’s story come alive. Your descendents will love you for it! Advanced Memoir for Everyone: On to Revision
Good writing depends on two things: knowing your craft and knowing yourself. This class will provide a supportive atmosphere in which to explore both. We’ll begin with a review of previous classes so that newcomers can learn and previous students can expand on the basic building blocks: find themes in your life, deciding how to organize your memoir, and creating the right balance between scene and summary. Then we’ll advance to revision and editing, taking a closer look at sentence structure, emphasis, sound, figurative language, and more. We’ll pay much attention to craft and self-editing so that your writing will come alive. |
