Living Life in the Internet Age

  • WA7-M07
  • Three Thursdays, 7–9 p.m.
  • February 1 though 15
  • $56 W&B members / $59 general public
  • Instructor: Robert Berkman

The emergence of digital communication technologies and phenomena like blogs, citizen journalism, podcasts, Wikipedia, RSS, and MySpace represents an increasing level of media and technology saturation in our lives. How does all this impact how we use language, gather information, write, use media, and live our day to day lives? We will explore these questions primarily by discussing the works of Neil Postman, one of the country’s most incisive critics of the impact of media and technology on culture. His works explored what he called our ongoing “Faustian bargains”: that is, each time we introduce a new technology into our lives, we get something, but we must also give something up too. Readings will include two short books by Neil Postman:
Amusing Ourselves to Death (updated edition); and Technopoly , as well as selected essays by Postman and other technology analysts.
