Winter 2008 Workshops at Writers & Books Creative Non-FictionMemoir for EveryoneWA8-N01 Good writing depends on two things: knowing your craft and knowing yourself. This class will provide a supportive atmosphere in which to explore both, so that you can discover what you want to say and how to say it. Find the themes in your life, decide how to organize your memoir, and create the right balance between scene and summary. We’ll also touch on revision and editing, taking a closer look at sentence structure, emphasis, sound, and figurative language. We’ll pay attention to craft and self-editing so that your writing comes alive. The Living, Breathing MemoirWA8-N02 It may be easy to tell someone a general outline of your life with the most important events. It is another thing to give that story the flesh and blood and emotion that makes it a living and breathing memoir. Izyaslav Darakhovskiy—whose book Under Three Empires is an account of his childhood spent partly in a Nazi camp in Ukraine, his later religious persecution under the communist system, and his emigration to the US—will discuss the challenges and skills of making an engaging story of your life, whatever your background, whatever your experience. An essential class for memoirists. You are here > Home > Winter 2008 Seminars, Courses & Workshops > Non-Fiction |
