Stage & ScreenScreenwriting 101
Want to see your name in lights? An award-winning screenwriter will help you start writing the script that may be Hollywood’s next blockbuster. Learn about story plotting, creating scenes, round and flat characters, character arcs, dialogue, the three-act structure, loglines, formatting, contests, Writers Guild agents, script registration and much more. Bonus: See scenes from films that illustrate class points.
Play Development
Playwrights need to hear their work read with actors and in front of an audience in order to know what works and what doesn’t work. This intermediate playwriting course is designed to give a playwright that feedback. Students are asked to work on a one act play (about 10 minutes long). The play will have 2 characters. Then, actors will be brought in to read the pieces on the final night, and the playwrights will have the option to have their work read in front of an audience.
Stand-up Comedy Workshop
Stand-up comedy is the art of writing jokes blended with the art of performing them. In this 6-week supportive experiential workshop the students will learn the basics of comedy writing and performing. Students will develop original material outside of class and perform each week for one another in a supportive atmosphere. Some in-class writing and exercises will take place. Material covered will include: types of humor, style, attitude, segues, A&B material, ad lib, microphone usage, juxtaposition joke writing, progressive comedy. The class will culminate with a show the final day of class. No experience necessary, beginners and pros welcome. Warning: class can get pretty jovial. “Depends” available onsite at nominal cost. Instructor is a former standup comic who has performed with Ellen DeGeneres, Robin Williams, and Paula Poundstone.
