Discovering Your Truth

WA9-T01
5 Wednesdays, 7-9 p.m.
Jan. 21 through Feb. 18
$99 W&B members / $104 general public
Instructor: Brad Van Auken

Most people follow paths that are dictated by their parents. teachers, bosses, employers, the society in which they live, etc., rather than from within. Studies have shown that people who have discovered who they are and what drives/energizes them are much happier and more successful than those who haven’t. As Socrates said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” Yet many people never take the time to do just that. This course provides a journaling process that will help you discover and live your deepest truths.

WA9-T02
1 Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Feb. 14

Joseph Campbell’s acclaimed text The Power Of Myth will serve as the foundation for this class, where we examine the importance of story and storytelling in the development and sustaining of healthy cultural communities over time and place.  Together, we will compare and contrast myths of indigenous peoples and world cultures with those of contemporary cultural belief systems. We will then apply critical and creative thinking skills to oral history accounts and cultural traditions to determine the historical keystones they rest upon, thus connecting the wisdom of past with present social policies and trends. It is not necessary to purchase The Power of Mythto participate in this class.

Lives & Legacies: Searching for the Feminine Story, a Workshop & Dialogue for Women

WA9-T03
2 Saturdays, 10 a.m.-noon
April 18 through April 25
$49 W&B members / $55 general public
Instructor: Almeta Whitis

The universal truths found in stories encompass class, race, gender, religious, ethnic, economic, political, geographic, and social constraints. Stories effectively connect people in profound and valuable ways. Storytelling is about connection, helping people to take risks and reveal something about themselves. In this workshop, participants will explore a woman’s life story in order to discover the lessons found there. Using story, we will recreate and explore the tradition of honoring elder women as the nurturers and educators for younger women, as well as their historic role as the supporters of the mental, spiritual and emotional health of the community.
