New Steps for the Gell Tree House

Last weekend Executive Director Joseph Flaherty and Board member Trevor Harrison went down trevor and stairsto Writers & Books retreat center, The Gell Center of the Finger Lakes, located in Bristol NY for a different kind of spring cleaning.

 

After several long months of harsh weather, the steps leading up to the Gell Center’s Tree House had fallen into dismay. The wood was rotting; the pieces keeping the frame together were decaying. It wasn’t pretty.

 

However, two strong men from Writers & Books were ready to give the stairs the extreme WAB makeover they desperately needed to be ready for summer rentals.

 

Hiking back and forth from the driveway at the Gleason Lodge, through the woods and up to the Tree House was no easy task. Joe and Trevor spent the morning carrying large units of recycled wood and metal bolts up to the dead steps to begin the transformation.

 

new stairsBy the end of the day, the new Tree House steps had been assembled and the WAB men were free to enjoy the weekend.

First Friday Festival of Sound & Light and Read, White, & Blue Book Sale

Rochester, NY – A First Friday like no other. On July 5th, starting at 6:00 pm, Writers & Books will be hosting a Read, White and Blue Book Sale in our bookstore at 740 University Ave. Then at 9:30 pm, join us in our back lot as we use our new projection equipment to celebrate our First Festival of Sound & Light.

Drawing on inspiration from Rochester Architect Claude Bragdon, the first show on July 5th will be a tribute to him, involving images, words, and a selection of music he used in his own Festival events a century ago.

The Read, White & Blue Book Sale will run from 6pm to 10 pm. With the exception of books on consignment, all paperback books will be $1.00 and all hardcover books will be $3.00.

SummerWrite Youth Scholarships Now Available

Rochester, NY – Writers & Books is happy to announce that Youth Scholarships are now available for SummerWrite courses. We are now accepting applications.

The application can be downloaded from our website at https://wab.org/scholarship-applications/  or can be picked up at 740 University Ave, Rochester NY 14607.

Many school districts in the area have received SummerWrite catalogs with a copy of the Youth Scholarship application. Districts include: Webster, East Rochester, Rush-Henrietta, Pittsford, Penfield, and Fairport. Ask at your Main Office to find out where the catalogs were distributed in your school.

Fear of Poetry Workshop for ELA teachers

“Fear of Poetry” workshop for Teachers

Rochester, NY – Long time educator and Writers & Books instructor MJ Iuppa will be leading a workshop for secondary ELA teachers on March 2nd and 16th form 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. The full title is Fear of Poetry: Overcoming Barriers and Engaging your Students in Poetry and costs $79 for Writers & Books members and $90 for general public. These half day workshop will spend time :

  • Building a basic foundation for teaching poetry
  • Offering fresh insight on important literary devices such as rhythm, metaphor, alliteration, and onomatopoeia
  • Introducing contemporary and culturally diverse poets
  • Focusing on sparking students interests

MJ will be giving teachers concrete exercises to bring back to their classrooms. Everyone will walk away with a resource packet and a wealth of ideas and inspiration.
