Deaf Lens: These Walls Are Signing | Ages: 11-15

Camp conducted in American Sign Language

Calling future writers, visual storytellers, artists, and filmmakers! In this two-week-long camp, Deaf and Hard of Hearing campers participate in designing and painting a mural at the Rochester Public Market while learning the art of filmmaking. We will create short films documenting the mural-making process, engage in meaningful conversation about our city’s roots, examine how history and culture inform art, and explore how stereotypes affect representations in text and art design. Campers will work with two accomplished Deaf mural artists to complete a piece of public art. Simultaneously, under the careful guidance of a seasoned filmmaker and teaching artist, campers will create storyboards, shot lists and schedules; direct and shoot short films about public art and the creation of the murals; and edit their films on Final Cut Pro. Throughout, we will focus on representation, art as activism, and the celebration of Deaf culture. Our work culminates with a presentation of final projects on Friday, August 12, open to invited guests.

Cancellation: In the event that a camp must be cancelled due to low enrollment or other unforeseeable circumstances, you will be notified as far in advance as possible, generally 3-5 business days. A full refund will be issued.

Withdrawal: To withdraw, email office@wab.org. If you withdraw at least 10 business days before the first day of  camp, you will receive a full refund, minus a 15% administrative fee. If you withdraw between 5 and 9 business days before the first day of  camp, you will receive a full refund, minus a 25% administrative fee. No refunds will be given for withdrawals after the above cited dates.
