The juxtaposition of time and tenses is something memoirists have to deal with. When to comment on the past, when simply to portray experience and let it speak for itself? Memoirs by definition look backward. They are the response to what Kierkegaard said—that life can only be understood backward but must be lived forward. Come to discuss, study and write.
