Gayatri Sethi: Unbelonging

May 19, 2022 @ EST 7:30 pm - 8:15 pm

Free – $20

In her luminous debut, Gayatri Sethi deftly interweaves verse, memoir, and a bold call to action as she recounts her experience searching for home in the diaspora.  Drawing upon her life story as a Tanzanian-born-Punjabi turned American educator and mother of biracial children, Sethi tells an intimate tale of stepping into her power while confronting misogyny, racism, and empire.

Gayatri Sethi is an educator, writer, and independent consultant. She teaches and writes about Social Justice, Global Studies, and Comparative Education. Born in Tanzania and raised in Botswana, she is of Punjabi descent, multilingual, and polycultural. She reflects on these lifelong experiences of identity, immigration, and belonging in her debut non-fiction book titled Unbelonging.  She is also the co-founder of the Desi KidLit community, an initiative to build solidarity among South Asian diaspora writers for young people. Gayatri Sethi will be in conversation with Sejal Shah.

Sejal Shah is the author of the award-winning essay collection This Is One Way to Dance. Her stories and essays have appeared in The Guardian, Brevity, Conjunctions, Guernica, Kenyon Review, Literary Hub, Longreads, and The Rumpus. She recently completed a story collection with images. She lives in Rochester, NY.
