Literary Conference – Three over 50

April 26 @ EST 4:30 pm - 5:45 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event
$15.00 – $20.00

Three writers over 50 read from their books and discuss their journey to publication.

Bernardine (Dine) Watson; Donna Spruijt-Metz; Chin Sun-Lee; Alison Meyers (moderator)

Bernardine (Dine) Watson’s debut book, Transplant: A Memoir (Washington Writers’ Publishing House, 2023), was winner of the first annual Washington Writers’ Publishing House Creative Nonfiction Award in 2023. Named one of the ‘5 over 50’ debuts in 2023 by Poets & Writers Magazine, Watson says that despite numerous rejections and often difficult circumstances, she kept dreaming. “Now I tell writers of any age to, as Langston Hughes wrote, ‘hold fast to dreams’ . . . Especially those carried deep in their hearts from childhood. Who knows what fate has in store?”  She has written on social policy issues for numerous major foundations, nonprofit organizations, and The Washington Post Health and Science section; and her poetry has been published in several journals and anthologies. She is a member of Day Eight Art’s Board of Directors.

Donna Spruijt-Metz’s first full-length book of poems, General Release from the Beginning of the World (Parlor Press, 2023), has been praised by Carl Phillips as “stitched equally with wit, tenderness, and the grace of longing.” The author of a micro-chapbook and two chapbooks, Slippery Surfaces (Finishing Line Press, 2019) and And Haunt the World (a collaboration with Flower Conroy, Ghost City Press, 2021), Spruijt-Metz says she “needed age to feel more robust in the life of scrutiny that poetry demands.” Read her March 2023 interview with Women Writers, Women[‘s] Books

Chin Sun-Lee is the author of Upcountry (Unnamed Press, 2023), listed among Publishers Weekly’s Big Indie Books of Fall 2023 and one of Poets & Writers’ ‘5 Over 50 for 2023.’ She is a contributor to the New York Times bestselling anthology Women in Clothes (Blue Rider Press/Penguin 2014) and is at work on her second novel. Sun-Lee observes that age has only given her “confidence in [her] resilience.” She has earned writing fellowships from The Hambidge Center and Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and elsewhere.
