Structural Repetition: Building a Stronger Poetry Collection

Rooted in foundational poetic traditions, yet flexibly attuned with postmodern sensibilities, the principle of Structural Repetition can help contemporary poets enrich and deepen our poetry at every level, from the syllable on up.  This workshop explores how Structural Repetition can help organize a multifarious collection of disparate poems into a movingly cohesive manuscript. You will be invited to bring your own poems into the discussion as we explore how the strategies of Structural Repetition apply to volumes of classic and contemporary poetry.

Annie Finch is an American poet, writer, translator, speaker, teacher, and performer. She is the author of seven books of poetry, including Eve (Story Line Press, 2019), finalist for the National Poetry Series and Yale Series of Younger Poets; Calendars (Tupelo Press, 2003), finalist for National Poetry Series and short-listed Foreword Poetry Book of the Year Award; and Among the Goddesses (Red Hen Press, 2010), which won the Sarasvati Award for Poetry. Her Spells: New and Selected Poems (Wesleyan University Press, 2012), “bears witness to a considerable body of work and an impressive commitment to the traditions of poetry across a poetic career that pans four decades,” claims poet and critic Caitriona O’Reilly. Finch’s other works include influential verse drama, translation, literary essays, poetry-writing textbooks, and anthologies on poetics, feminism, and women’s earth-based spirituality. She is widely recognized for her mesmerizing poetry performances and mastery of poetic craft and has been translated in many languages.
