Poetry Reading & Conversation
Lucia LoTempio is the author of Hot with the Bad Things (Alice James Books, 2020), lauded by Ross Gay as “a book that thinks about and thinks about thinking about violence, patriarchy, memory, witnessing, and more in ways unlike anything I have ever read . . . this book does beautiful, crucial, and difficult work.” LoTempio’s poems can be found in Passages North, The Journal, TYPO, Quarterly West, as part of the Academy of American Poets poem-a-day series, and elsewhere. With Suzannah Russ Spaar, she co-authored the chapbook Undone in Scarlet (Tammy, 2019). The author lives and writes in Pittsburgh.
The poems in Lotempio’s debut Hot with the Bad Things take a close look at violence against women, both physical and psychological. The poems follow the intersection of fear, identity, and the malleability of the speaker’s own experiences of violence enacted on her by men, particularly by a past partner. Imagistic and evocative, the poems ask how are we conditioned into living with violence, and how do we move forward.
