Make a Scene! Crafting the Building Blocks of a Story

November 16, 2019 @ EST 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Special Topic Workshop: 1 Session, Saturday
November 16, 10 am – 12:30 pm
Instructor: Alex Sanchez

How do we create scenes that keep readers turning pages? We’ll take a deep dive into the fundamentals of crafting dynamic, layered, character-driven scenes. Through readings, discussions, ideas, and writing exercises, we’ll study how proactive characters determine plot events and are changed in the process. We’ll explore keys to selecting point of view; establishing stakes; identifying inner and outer conflicts; incorporating sensory details; choosing types of scenes; and deciding when to show vs. when to summarize. Plus, we’ll learn how to string together scenes, with each scene carefully structured to hook the reader forward to the next scene. You’ll take away a blueprint to construct stronger, more engaging, page-turning scenes.
