Music & Literature: A Rochester Piano Club and Writers & Books Collaboration

November 10, 2019 @ EST 3:00 am - 6:00 pm

UURoc: First Universalist Church of Rochester, NY
Free and open to the public.
Music and literature have a long history together – telling tales, passing on experiences, adding depth and emotion to a story. We’re exploring this intersection between the written word and piano music with a collaboration between two Rochester organizations – Writers and Books and the Rochester Piano Club.

Program:

Theo Munson / RPC & Brian Wood / WAB
A short story accompanied by the music of Chick Corea’s ‘Children’s Songs’

Betty Wayman / RPC & Charles Cote / WAB
A poem written in the voice of the pianist set to Tchaikovsky’s ‘Morning Prayer’.

Kathleen Toole / RPC & Kitty Jospe / WAB-RPC
In exploring commonalities in history at age 10, and in memory of our grandparents, we combine in our piano-poetry collaboration based on Schumann’s ‘Scenes of Childhood’

George Daddis / RPC & Kitty Jospe / WAB
A short story inspired by Rachmaninov’s ‘Prelude in D Op. 23 No. 4’

Kalen Winfrey / RPC & Lucy Luoxin / WAB
A recitation of the poem Autumn Rain followed by Liszt’s ‘Valley of Obermann’.

Hwaen Ch’uqi / RPC & Ralph Black / WAB
A conversation between a musician and a poet results in an interplay of sound and meaning, featuring poetry of Ralph Black and music of Ravel, Schumann, and Ch’uqi. Poems read by Christian Wessels.
