As an author, one of Nabokov’s greatest pleasures was creating delicious conundrums for his readers. This three- week class will explore Nabokov’s novel Pale Fire, which represents a reading adventure on several levels, mixing not only genres (poetry and autobiography, fiction and fantasy), but also narrators, as the reader tries to figure out who is a figment of whose imagination. We will use this class as a springboard to visit Nabokov’s intriguing approach to writing and reading, as well as discuss what it means to write in exile.
