As writers, we look for tools that best scaffold our writing to achieve our intended expression or message. Typically, this takes us down the rabbit holes of genre, but our work can often benefit from engaging with multiple genres. This class will focus on the collision of poetry and memoir in lyric hybrid, and touch on other modes, including visual art and digital media. We will unravel the tools of each genre, and explore when and how to apply those tools to craft nuanced creative work. The workshop will feature contextualized examples, discussion, prompted writing time, feedback, and Q&A.
Lucia LoTempio is the author of Hot with the Bad Things (Alice James, 2020), a lyric sequence focuses on how we talk about violence against women. Her work weaves memoir and poetry in its conception of memory, trauma, and the language of violence. LoTempio has taught creative writing and composition for the University of Pittsburgh, masterclasses at a variety of literary centers, and writing courses for Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media. She lives and writes in Pittsburgh, where she designs curriculum for Arts Greenhouse, a project of Carnegie Mellon that serves young writers in Pittsburgh schools. https://www.lucialotempio.com/poems
