Writing a novel is like running a marathon. Starting with six rules for novelists (Rule #3: What to do if you run out of ideas), identifying the practical how-tos of creating a larger work, and addressing the personal aspect of creative writing (no rules), we’ll explore strategies for sustaining our writing practice and going the distance.
J. Mulrooney is a high energy and supportive teacher who connects practical “you can start doing this tomorrow” advice with a higher level discussion of how literary art works. His novel An Equation of Almost Infinite Complexity made him a finalist for the Campbell award for best new writer of science fiction and fantasy. He has also published a book of short stories and holds an MFA in literary fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Mr Mulrooney’s earliest writing job was to print “I will not be disrespectful in class” fifty times on a sheet of paper. Since then, his plots have improved considerably.
