Eldridge McClaney: Reading & Presentation @ 4 – 4:45 pm
Ms. McClaney is the author of I Go Back: Stories from a Southern Upbringing, a memoir about her farming family’s lifestyle in Pigeon Creek, Alabama, and the choices made to live through difficult times. Appropriate for junior- and senior-high students, as well as adults, the book illuminates community activities, religious celebrations, and benevolent and unselfish acts of generosity.
Chiamaka Ikpeze: How We Survive Our Own Lives @ 5 – 6 pm
A social and emotional healing coach, Chiamaka Ikpeze creates safe spaces. Her praxis includes emotional learning, nonviolent communication, conflict resolution, crisis and conflict intervention, wellness coaching, and restorative counseling. Using her academic, professional and lived experience, she posts videos exploring and discussing different aspects of Social and Emotional Learning and healing.
Almeta Whitis: Womenspeace-Marvelous Woman @ 6:15 pm – 7 pm
Almeta Whitis is a renowned storyteller, theatre artist, author, and poet who has taught on five continents. Combining diverse stories and traditions, alongside history, she encourages students to explore movement, dance, film, and the visual arts; and helps them gain knowledge of academic subjects and the world at large. Her many awards include Phi Delta Kappa’s 1995 Lay Teacher of the Year, National Endowment for the Arts’ Most Skilled and Experienced Community Artist, and Governor Mario Cuomo’s 1993 Decade of the Child Award. She is featured in Rochester Museum and Science Center’s “CHANGEMAKERS: 200 Rochester Women Who Have Changed The World” exhibition.
