Using “Literature” of Illness in Writing

April 17, 2021 @ EST 10:00 am - 11:30 am

$32.00

Member Price: $25
1 Session, 1.5 hours
Deadline to Register: April 16, 5 pm
Instructor: Sarah Cedeño

Prescription medication guides, prescription advertisements, medical encyclopedia entries, symptom “diaries,” medical charts, doctor’s notes, physiological diagrams and illustrations, medical instructions, health histories, etc. are all promising forms that can be used to explore the writer’s experience, guiding us out of the familiar and comfortable narratives we tell ourselves and others about our bodies. In this workshop, we will find new ways to view our individual medical “material” and write new narratives. Have an example(s) of your “medical literature” (anything listed above, or beyond) at the ready, something that you find interesting enough to turn into art.

Sarah Cedeño’s work has appeared in The Journal, 2 Bridges, The Pinch, The Citron Review, Punctuate, The Baltimore Review, New World Writing, The Rumpus, Hippocampus Magazine, Bellevue Literary Review, and elsewhere. Sarah holds an MFA from Goddard College and has served as editor of several literary magazines. She lives in Brockport, NY with her husband and two sons, and teaches writing at the College at Brockport.

Workshops are conducted EST via Zoom, a virtual platform that allows you to participate in exercises and contribute to group conversation. To participate, please register by the deadline using the ticket portal below, or go to Scholarships. Zoom links are emailed to registered participants.
