Writing an Identity Narrative

October 22, 2019 @ EST 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, repeating until November 26, 2019

$225.00

Evening Workshop: 6 Sessions, Tuesdays
October 22 – November 26, from 6:30 pm – 9 pm
Instructor: Robert D. Baker

Deadline to Register: October 14, 11:59 pm

In this course, you will write about how you claimed identity or faced challenges because of your identity. Narratives may address one aspect—or the intersection of multiple aspects—of who you are. Possibilities include coming out, confronting gender bias, becoming a parent, responding to racism, experiencing a religious conversion, advocating for yourself as a trans person, immigrating to another country, defining yourself as a teenager, celebrating your ethnicity, having a political awakening, or facing the challenges of aging.

Writing prompts will allow you to examine your chosen aspect(s) of identity in detail. Although everyone’s journey is unique, we all undergo struggles, shift perspectives, and encounter various forms of resistance. As we workshop our writing, each of us will discover core emotions that we share with people having very different identities.

Robert D. Baker is the Coordinator of the English Composition Program at Brockport College.  He has been teaching writing since 2004 and has been working in the fields of Adult Education and Higher Education for over 25 years.
