In great fiction, the setting comes alive as a character. But what does that mean, and how can you do the same in your own writing? Through readings, discussions, and writing exercises, we’ll explore tools for having your setting impact your plot, showing characters interacting with the setting (and vice-versa), linking setting to your characters’ emotions, using your setting to show growth, and giving depth and meaning to your stories through setting. In this workshop, you’ll learn techniques for constructing entire worlds for your readers.
Alex Sanchez has published eight novels with Simon & Schuster, including the American Library Association “Best Book for Young Adults” Rainbow Boys and Lambda Award- winning So Hard to Say. His novel Bait won the Tomas Rivera Mexican-American Book Award and the Florida Book Award Gold Medal. His full-length graphic novel for DC Comics You Brought Me the Ocean comes out in June. He has a master’s in counseling, worked for many years as a youth and family counselor, and now works as an author, teacher, and freelance developmental editor. www.AlexSanchez.com
